All About 2nd Grade:

Welcome to 2nd grade! We learn so many different things and also have a lot of fun! If you are curious about what happens during the year, please check the information below. Topics Covered:

Language Arts: Reading fiction and non-fiction, making text connections (text to text, text to self, text to world), identifying titles, authors, illustrators, subtitles, and captions. Discussing characters, plot, setting, problems and solutions. Using capital letters and punctuation when writing. Identifying nouns, adjectives, verbs, conjunctions, pronouns, homophones and homonyms, etc. Writing personal narratives, writing to explain, writing to persuade, writing friendly letters, writing step-by-step directions. 

 

Math: Understanding telling time, money, fractions, creating and solving word problems, skip-counting, adding and subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers, adding with regrouping, subtracting with "borrowing", identifying 2D and 3D shapes, multiplication and division strategies, and symmetry. (This is the base level content covered and does not reflect the enrichment group). 

 

Science: Scientific process (making a hypothesis and supporting or rejecting it), magnets, matter, weather, scientific tools, plant parts and their jobs, animal lifecycles, plant and animal adaptations, habitats, and creating experiments. 

 

Social Studies: Timelines, map skills and parts, identifying continents and oceans, famous Americans, Native Americans, economics, Ancient Egypt, Ancient China, and past/present/future.
